There’s a reason why Fort Worth’s called “Funkytown.” With an array of locally owned restaurants, bars, breweries, retailers and music venues, there’s an endless amount of faces and places that make our city truly unique. In honor of National Get Funky Day, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite “funky” finds in Fort Worth.
1. Funky Picnic Brewery & Café
Funky Picnic Brewery & Café was founded in a Fort Worth garage in 2012 by a couple of friends looking to share their love of beer, bread and the great outdoors. When they officially opened up shop in 2019, they worked with local artists to furnish the earthy, industrial-style brewpub, offering an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience for Fort Worth locals and visitors alike. Funky Picnic keeps things fresh by constantly rotating their lineup of craft brews, which flaunt some pretty “funky” names – from an IPA called, “COOL ENOUGH FOR CURTAINS,” to a Pale Ale named, “NO SHIRT. NO SHOES. FOUR CATS.” They also happen to be our neighbors in South Main Village! Come grab a cold one and enjoy their curated menu of burgers and sandwiches, like the “Bohemian Wrapsody,” the “Funky Burger,” or the “Sweet Home Avocado.”
2. Doc’s Records and Vintage
You know you’re about to walk into one of Fort Worth’s funkiest places when you’re greeted by a massive mural of Jimi Hendrix riding a dolphin while playing a flaming guitar. Doc’s Records and Vintage has every vinyl junkie and pop culture enthusiast covered with their eclectic and original inventory. They offer a wide variety of products from records, CDs and turntables, to art, concert t-shirts and posters, retro memorabilia, and other oddities. Doc’s even holds a neighborhood flea market each month with several local vendors for those looking to thrift shop, revamp their vintage, or just enjoy an afternoon with likeminded Fort Worth locals in the heart of the Foundry District.
3. McFly’s Neighborhood Pub
The future’s lookin’ fun(ky) at McFly’s Neighborhood Pub! The recently opened “Back To The Future”-inspired bar is packed with 80s nostalgia, Instagrammable murals, themed cocktails, and plenty of “easter eggs” for fans of the film, like lights made out of vintage suitcases, propellors for ceiling fans, and a Marty McFly mannequin sitting on the roof. Time travel back to the 80s while enjoying one of their signature drinks, such as the “Great Scotch,” the “Martini McFly,” or the “Gigawatt Shot,” on the patio of this soon-to-be iconic Fort Worth venue! Did we mention there’s also live music?
4. Funkytown Donuts and Drafts
Funkytown Donuts and Drafts is a family-owned bakery dedicated to bringing joy to customers through their funky-fresh twist on the donut. Located in Sundance Square, this inventive gourmet donut shop offers a rotating list of exclusive monthly flavors made from scratch in-house daily. October’s specialty menu features Chai Spice, Pumpkin Cheesecake, Maple Bacon, and Caramel Apple (just to name a few). Quench your thirst afterward with coffee, brews, wine or bubbly – the options are endless at Funkytown! And trust us, handcrafted donuts + craft beer is the combination of flavors you never knew you needed.
5. Lola’s Trailer Park
Located in the heart of the Cultural District, Lola’s Trailer Park is far from your run-of-the-mill West 7th-area bar. With an expansive indoor-outdoor patio, permanent food truck serving up Dayne’s Craft BBQ, vintage boutique located on-site, outdoor stage, and a variety of monthly events, there’s never a dull moment at this funky Fort Worth venue. Be sure to check out Lola’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Rummage Sale on the last Sunday of each month, featuring 40 local artisan & vintage vendors, live music, and plenty of craft beers and cocktails – or if shopping for locally grown produce is more your speed, check out Lola’s Local Farmers Market on the second Sunday of the month to browse a wide selection of fresh food, coffee, flowers, and more.
